In a significant military action, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil refinery. This strike was carried out Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military command.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary providers of fuel products in southern Russia and is directly involved in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on potential pathways to end the war.
“We had a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it concerns approaches, meetings, and, of course, the timeline.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
This case reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov shared in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as fabricated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in defiance.
Foreign Prisoner Case
The Kremlin has stated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of spying.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is closely following the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and push for his release as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.
Conversely, former actors from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to present its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.
