Wealthy businessman Isaacman has been formally approved as the next chief of NASA, concluding an unusual confirmation journey where Trump put his name forward, withdrew it, and then put him forward again.

Isaacman, an aviation enthusiast who became the first non-professional astronaut to perform a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in many years to come straight from the private sector.

For numerous observers, the success of his tenure will be judged on one pivotal challenge: its ability to send astronauts to the lunar surface ahead of China.

The administration has made clear a ambition for the United States to create a permanent lunar base, both to facilitate mining operations and to function as a launching pad for travel to the Red Planet.

Legislative Approval and Nomination Drama

On This week, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination with a decisive vote.

Trump originally rescinded Isaacman's nomination in the spring, citing a "deep dive of prior associations".

At the point, the president was engaged in a dispute with the SpaceX CEO, one of his major contributors, with whom the nominee has a working relationship.

The new administrator has stated he is now fully behind Trump's mission to extract lunar resources, placing him in disagreement with Elon Musk, who has stated that lunar missions is a detour from the primary objective of Martian exploration.

Vision for NASA

In the present space battle, nations are competing to exploit the lunar surface.

“Now is not the time for hesitation but a time for decisive steps because if we lag, if we stumble, we may never catch up, and the implications could change the strategic equilibrium here on our planet,” he told the Senate committee earlier this month.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees introducing more commercial rivalry as crucial for achieving those goals, according to a recently leaked document detailing his plan for NASA.

In his Senate hearing, he stood by the strategy, which he developed when he was first nominated, but noted it was a evolving strategy.

His openness to rivalry could also cause friction with Musk. Last week, he commended the granting of a lucrative deal to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the few rivals of Musk's SpaceX.

In the document, he proposed NASA should expand collaboration with the scientific community, casting the agency as a "amplifier for scientific discovery".

He cited the upcoming deployment of the Roman Telescope as a prime illustration.

"And if we be on the verge of something groundbreaking - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will explore every option to get the program to the pad, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to produce the scientific results," he stated.

Personal Fortune

According to reports, Isaacman's net worth is estimated at around $1.2bn, primarily derived from his payment processing company and the sale of his firm that trained pilots and managed a private fleet of military aircraft.

The position of agency chief will be his first job in government service, a contrast to the previous two appointees appointed as NASA chief.

He will take over from Sean Duffy, who has served as interim NASA chief since the summer.
