The network's Premier Fresh Series of 2025 Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
