The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term emerged a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to doctors like child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it denies each claim it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
