Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza CEO Departs After Move Towards Chicken.
A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have hit maximum pizza demand while broadening the chain into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its directors.
Leadership Shake-Up
Andrew Rennie is exiting after just two years in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a new leader.
Rennie, who was with the company for over 20 years, had sought to redirect Britain's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, commenting recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said poultry was the quickest rising menu item in the world.
Board Disagreements
It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the governance team over his approach and direction, although Domino's release said he was departing “through mutual consent”.
New Brand Launch
In the autumn, the chain introduced its poultry brand – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.
While the firm is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as planned, it regards fried chicken as complementary to its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Statement
Bull, the Domino's chair, said: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the right chief executive to lead the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Market Challenges
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it warned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the run-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the shutting of multiple locations a last month, after the firm behind its UK venues entered insolvency.
Health Efforts
Responding to market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced reduced-calorie options, such as its thin-crust range of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and previously worked for the gambling company William Hill. It is believed that she is not seeking to occupy the chief executive role long-term.
Frampton stated: “We have a multiple ongoing growth and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at a rapid rate.”
She added these involved further work on the company's procurement system and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a permanent finance director until March 16, when a new appointee joins from the drinks company C&C Group. Until then, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
