A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is checking images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
