Heat & Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Player Detentions
Miami scored eighty-six first-half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half points to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also won their initial match since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
