Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
