Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the former Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they begin the search of appointing a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
