Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in military or security roles.

"Like us, you all took an oath to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the representatives declared in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the law or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction

The recorded statement seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a joint announcement denouncing the statements.

"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our United States with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the security of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and retract his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.

Lawmakers' Strong Answer

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a statement.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this country and made an vow to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that important duty."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by death for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Additional Governmental Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to defy commands, I think that's historic in American history."

The GOP official also allegedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."

"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the official stated. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She added: "The purity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
