Blast Costs 3 Carabinieri During Property Removal Procedure in the Verona Area
A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and one more individual who fled after the incident was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location displayed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.
A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
