After weeks of tension, schemes and sabotage, Celebrity Traitors concludes with a thrilling finale
Spoiler alert - This piece discloses details from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Throughout the season, viewers witnessed murders, double-crosses, intense glares, and an unforgettable incident that pierced the overwhelming tension.
However on the final evening, the ultimate victor of the first celebrity edition was revealed.
From 19 contestants, just a handful were left standing: Deceivers and loyal players competing for the prize.
Soon, the field narrowed to just three: the remaining contestants.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a shocking outcome that broke the internet and made him tearful.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, revealing to the other players that he'd always been a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."
"You played amazingly," they consoled him. "It's all right."
Social media immediately exploded with this development. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented one user.
"It couldn't have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while someone else called it "the television highlight of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, will receive all the prize money, with the final pot amounting to £87,500.
The comedian's evolution from comic relief to strategic player was one of the standout highlights of the season.
But his win still shocked viewers in shock, as noted by industry observers.
"The thought of him, among everyone, executing an expert performance in deception felt about as likely as him keeping a straight face through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, fellow players summed up why no one had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have come down to the morning meal in traitor attire and I still wouldn't have thought he was deceiving us. His humor distracted me," one participant said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how does one eliminate someone who is so loveable?" asked another celebrity.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his time on the program.
"I'd like to participate once more... I doubt it would work again!"
Thursday evening's installment was extended to 70 minutes on the network. There was a different start than typical episodes, as every celebrity were aware who'd make it at the breakfast table.
There was some very uplifting, and atypical for the show music, as we recapped some moments from each of the finalists' experience in the game.
True to form, the comedian gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I began the competition as something of an anxious mess. I've thrown close allies under the bus, I've murdered beloved figures in plain sight. Apparently I'm more deceptive and player than I believed."
Meanwhile, another contestant noted that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than playing for a national team", while another said he was "totally surprised" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning of the finale, several players appeared to be attempting to become the new style icon of the competition, replacing the previously eliminated fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast resembling a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
However, he got out-jacketted by another contestant's maroon velvet tuxedo. What a look.
Next up was the challenge, with the final players getting on board a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.
This task saw them ripping up images of eliminated players. Spare a thought for a player who managed to get hit in the head multiple times by the lid of a heavy wooden box.
Before long, the moment arrived for the elimination discussion.
The deceivers made a pact in advance, pledging to stick together. "We've progressed significantly, I'm not going to betray him," said one, while their partner simply laughed.
However, one did stick to their agreement. But, managing to stay under the radar for the majority of the competition, their partner still got the most votes.
The last deceiver appeared he was in significant distress to be the final deceiver remaining. "Now I'm on my own, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Social media and viewers were similarly upset.
"I hoped against this contestant to be banished. An endearing deceiver," said an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," posted another user.
But there was no time to dwell on their elimination. Before long, the game reached the final stage - this being what we were really all here for.
The final four stood over the ceremonial fire. Meanwhile, the partnership collapsed, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - following a surprising decision from their partner, who turned against them.
"It hurts to be betrayed at the final moment in that manner," said the ousted contestant. Later, we learned that when they message, the betrayed player refers to the other as a traitor.
Finally, just three players remained in the game: the final trio.
One player, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the competition. The same decision was made by another, and everything depended on the final participant, who did the same - resulting in the deceiver was the winner.
For observers, the moment where the other players consoled the champion was "compelling television". "I predict it could be in the running for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.
Fortunately, the winner quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and was able to enjoy the moment.
"Such an emotional journey. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and here I am a winner," the winner said.
He also joked about that infamous murder - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the host in the concluding moments and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The recent episodes of famous people scheming, scheming and sometimes unexpected moments may seem like a bizarre fantasy. But it really did all happen. It will be remembered fondly.
