A senior Russian military figure has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event happened on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

The committee mentioned that one theory under investigation points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Location of the Attack

Officials have been dispatched to the site, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the capital.

Reports indicate the explosion took place in a parking area adjacent to a residential building.

History of Assaults

Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.

This most recent event comes after other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are never formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.

Hostilities has increasingly seen covert operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
